The screening at the Gray Area - a Mission non-profit that supports antidisciplinary collaboration in the Mission District on June 23rd, 2024 will start at 4 pm and include a Q&A with the Creative Producer Duygu Gün, the Director of Photography Özgen Göksoy and some participating artists. Then, local Balkan Brass Band Fanfare Zambaleta will perform, leading the audience with a parade to Bissap Baobab - a multicultural community junction for the weekly Balkan Sundays event.

Balkancisco aims to create intercultural awareness and showcase the vibrant community of Balkan musicians in San Francisco. Rather than being a comprehensive historical documentary, it focuses on the emotional journey of the musicians as they share their experiences learning and playing Balkan music. Through their stories, the audience will gain a deeper understanding of how music can bridge cultural divides and bring people together.
Balkancisco, a collaborative effort that brings together the talents of three friends from Türkiye: Tuğrul Sarıkaya, Duygu Gün, and Özgen Göksoy. With Tuğrul Sarıkaya at the helm, the documentary unfolds under his visionary direction. Duygu Gün takes center stage, not only captivating audiences with her compelling story and narration but also shaping the overarching vision of the production as its creative producer. Behind the lens, cinematographer Özgen Göksoy expertly captures the stunning visuals that breathe life into the project. This captivating documentary has garnered acclaim, earning the "Excellent Documentary Award" at the San Francisco International New Concept Film Festival and the prestigious "Focus on Balkan Cinema Award" at the World of Film International Festival Glasgow.
The documentary unveils the journey of the Balkan music to San Francisco, and its integration into a key element of the city's underground music culture. As the inaugural exploration of this scene, it promises a vibrant celebration of sound and dance, coercing you to sway to its rhythm and irresistibly drawing you to dance.
