Istanbul Connection:

A Bay Area musical collective formed when thirteen members of the hottest Balkan and Latin bands were gravitationally pulled to visit the city of Istanbul. With a mind towards cross-cultural connection and sonic expansion, these die-hards flew 7,000 miles to represent a piece of the the Bay Area music scene. In the process, they have cemented themselves as a supergroup of groove and since their epic beginnings, the band has performed sold-out-show after sold-out-show. They continue to draw their inspiration from the Turkish Maqam, Flamenco, Rumba, Balkan, and Cumbia they are are so deeply rooted in. Come prepared to dance!

AXON Orchestra merges urban and rural aesthetics of the Balkans and the Middle East in its own unique post punk language. Lead by Miles Jay, Music Director of the critically acclaimed Nile Project, this special birthday concert will feature many surprises on a sonic journey from Bucharest to Baghdad. With self made portable backpack speakers, drum line and Tuba, the AXON Orchestra evokes soundscapes both blazing and entrancing. Founded by brothers Miles and Ian Jay, this 8 piece super group presents an innovative and dazzling electrified marching band experience. Extra Nappy offers a glimpse into an organically-developing musical movement encapsulating the vibrant history of African American music, from gospel, blues, jazz, R&B, and funk, all the way up to contemporary hip-hop. Bandleader Howard Wiley may still be a young lion in jazz years, but he’s also cemented a reputation as the hardest bopster around, the purveyor of a retro aesthetic which wouldn’t have been out of place when cool jazz was undergoing labor pains. A rotating cast of local players — including Thomas Pridgen, Lionel “L.J.” Holoman, Michael “Tiny” Lindsey, and Darian Gray — joins Wiley for a full-blown session encompassing original numbers as well as inspired arrangements of classic songs.”
